My Podcast Guy® NewsletterOne of the most strategic answers a podcaster can give right now is also one of the hardest: not yet. There’s a lot of pressure right now to add video to your podcast. If you’re a business owner using your show as part of your marketing, I understand why that pressure gets your attention. Video looks like growth, visibility, and relevance from the outside. But here’s what I want to remind you of. A production trend isn't automatically a good strategy for your show. And when your podcast why is clear, sometimes it will lead you to wait instead of rushing in. That’s what this week’s episode is about. I want to make the case that saying “not yet” to video can be a thoughtful, but hard, decision. Not because video is bad. Not because you should never do it. But because adding video before your show is ready can create problems that are bigger than the opportunity you were hoping to gain. In my work with podcasters, I’ve seen early video adoption disrupt three important things. The first is consistency. Audio already takes time, focus, and follow-through. Once you add cameras, lighting, editing, visual setup, and all the extra decisions that come with video, the production load changes fast. And for many podcasters, that’s the moment the schedule starts slipping. The second is content quality. A lot of hosts become more aware of how they look than what they’re trying to say once the camera is on. Their energy gets divided. Their message gets less clear. Even though the production becomes more demanding. The third is momentum. Some shows are already doing what they need to do. They’re building trust and helping the right people. They’re supporting client attraction, authority, and message consistency. If that’s already happening, the decision to add video should be made carefully, not emotionally. Here are three questions I think are worth the time to answer thoughtfully. Is your current publishing schedule already consistent and sustainable? Does your ideal audience actually consume video podcast content in your niche? Do you have the time, budget, and creative energy to add video without compromising what’s already working? If your answer is no to any of those, then “not yet” may be your strategy. And that’s okay. In fact, it may be exactly what protects the long-term health of your show. If you’ve been wondering whether now is the time to add video to your podcast, I hope this gives you permission to slow down and make that decision on purpose. Your podcast should support your business, not create a heavier system that pulls you away from the work your audience actually values. My Podcast Guy® Newsletter If you’ve listened to Season 6 of The Podcast Why, you know I’ve spent a lot of time talking about video, format, and production decisions through one lens: does this choice actually match the job of your podcast? That’s where I wanted to end the season. In Episode 7, I talk about production quality as a reflection of your podcast why. This matters because a lot of podcasters think higher quality always means more gear, more editing, more polish, more studio time,...
My Podcast Guy® Newsletter A lot of podcasters don’t need video yet. But some absolutely do. That’s the conversation I’m having in this week’s episode of The Podcast Why. I've talk about why “not yet” can be a smart answer when it comes to video. I meant that. If adding video would hurt your consistency, dilute your focus, or create more production pressure than your show can support, waiting is often the better strategy. But I also don’t want podcasters to stay stuck in “not yet” when the...
