How to Know When Video Actually Fits Your Podcast Strategy

My Podcast Guy® Newsletter

A lot of podcasters don’t need video yet. But some absolutely do.

That’s the conversation I’m having in this week’s episode of The Podcast Why.

I've talk about why “not yet” can be a smart answer when it comes to video. I meant that. If adding video would hurt your consistency, dilute your focus, or create more production pressure than your show can support, waiting is often the better strategy.

But I also don’t want podcasters to stay stuck in “not yet” when the real answer has changed.

Sometimes your show reaches a point where video is no longer a distraction. It becomes the next right step. Not because it’s popular, or FOMO. It's because your podcast why is pointing in that direction.

In this episode, I walk through five signals I look for when helping podcasters make that decision.

Look at where the audience is consuming content.

Look at whether video would strengthen competitive positioning in the market.

Look at whether the format of the show would actually benefit from being seen, not just heard.

Look at bandwidth, because video has to be sustainable.

Look at readiness, because video works best when it’s being added to a strong foundation, not used to create one.

That last part matters more than most podcasters realize. If your publishing rhythm is not dependable or your target audience is still unclear, video usually won’t solve that. It tends to amplify what’s already there.

But when video is added, it can help with visibility, strengthen authority, and deepen connections with your audience.

If you’ve been wondering whether your show is ready for video, this episode will help you think it through.

Our clients now focus on the ‘why’ they’re podcasting.

Not on the ‘how’ to podcast.

But when it’s time to choose a format, plan episodes, or decide what to ask listeners to do next, everything feels equally possible. In my work with podcasters, I’ve seen how quickly that early excitement can turn into confusion when the show doesn’t have a...

My Podcast Guy® Newsletter If you’ve listened to Season 6 of The Podcast Why, you know I’ve spent a lot of time talking about video, format, and production decisions through one lens: does this choice actually match the job of your podcast? That’s where I wanted to end the season. In Episode 7, I talk about production quality as a reflection of your podcast why. This matters because a lot of podcasters think higher quality always means more gear, more editing, more polish, more studio time,...

My Podcast Guy® Newsletter One of the most strategic answers a podcaster can give right now is also one of the hardest: not yet. There’s a lot of pressure right now to add video to your podcast. If you’re a business owner using your show as part of your marketing, I understand why that pressure gets your attention. Video looks like growth, visibility, and relevance from the outside. But here’s what I want to remind you of. A production trend isn't automatically a good strategy for your show....
