Is Your Podcast Purpose Clear Enough to Keep You Going?

My Podcast Guy® Newsletter

Your podcast's purpose answers one clear question: why does this show exist?

Not why podcasts are trendy.

Not why your industry says you should have one.

Why this show, right now, deserves a slot in your week and your listeners’ ears.

When the purpose is fuzzy, everything else, like topics, format, schedule, and promotion, feels heavy. When the purpose is clear, those decisions get lighter because they have a place to land.

A common story: Jenna’s turning point

Jenna launched a professional‑niche podcast because “everyone said a podcast builds authority.”

After about 25 episodes, she hit a wall: tired, unsure what to cover, and oddly disconnected from her content.

On paper, the show helped with visibility, but it didn’t energize her or change much for listeners.

When we set aside the marketing answers and asked, “What is this show for in your listener’s life?” she landed on something different: she wanted listeners to feel less stupid asking basic questions—to hear explanations that didn’t make them feel small.

That shift changed everything.

What a clear purpose sounds like

Once Jenna found that focus, she could state a concise purpose that guided every choice:

“This show exists to help [specific person] feel less intimidated and more confident taking the next step in [field], by explaining things simply and honestly.”

That sentence flips the emphasis from the host’s benefits to the listener’s outcome, names a concrete result (“one notch more confident”), and connects to an approach (simple, honest explanations).

From there, the podcast description, expected results, and episode style all fell into place.

A 3‑step exercise you can do in 10 minutes

1. Ask: “Why does this podcast exist in this season of my life?” Write your first, honest answer—don’t edit.
2. Ask: “What is this show for in the life of my listener?” Finish this sentence: “This show exists to help [who] [do/feel/understand what].” Aim for one sentence.
3. Read it aloud. If it feels vague, make it more specific: name the person, the struggle, and the practical help you offer.

A prompt to get unstuck + next step

My Podcast Guy® Newsletter Here's something I ask every podcaster I work with — and it stops most of them cold. What business problem does your podcast solve? Not what you talk about. Not who your audience is. What specific friction in your business does your show exist to fix? Most can't answer it. And that missing answer is costing them more than they realize. Here's what I've seen work over ten years. The business podcasters getting real results have their show pointed at something...

My Podcast Guy® Newsletter Let me say something that might sting a little. If you’re a consultant, coach, or service provider — and your podcast is sitting in the same mental category as your journal or your weekend hobby — we have a problem. Over ten years of working with podcasters, I’ve seen the same pattern. The ones who treat their show as a creative outlet plateau. They get inconsistent. They burn out. And eventually, they quietly stop. The ones who build something that lasts make one...
